Early in September, I was in town taking care of some personal business when I ran into a friend I see frequently. He asked me while we were talking, What is the point to life? Where is the meaning? I jotted down the reference, Romans 8:20, on a Post-It and gave it to him. I ran into him again, this week, and asked him if he found a Bible and read the verse I gave to him. He said he did and did not understand how it was relevant to his question. The verse reads, For creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own will but by the will of Him Who subjected it, in hope that the creation would be liberated from its bondage to decay into the everlasting fellowship of the family of God. I told him that the verse give context to the school of thought physicists know as the Law of Entropy: That everything is tending toward chaos and decomposition. It is the Second Law of Thermal Dynamics. I explained to him that God purposed that the pain we feel and the growing disorder was intended by God to drive us ultimately to Him and the richness of His love. As any perceptive student of Scripture, he objected, But why punish all of us for Adams failure? I told him the dragon was let out, once the first sin was committed, the lion of its consequences was out. We are left with its consequences and the curse of its power over us. He said that makes sense. I told him to read Romans 5 and 6, tonight. He said he would. Please pray for Steve (his name is changed to protect his privacy). I think the Lord is really working in his heart. Thank you, friends.
