Early morning reflections and ramblings on the past year: I - TopicsExpress

Early morning reflections and ramblings on the past year: I find it interesting to note that the number of followers for The Farm - Terre Noire site falls off significantly the minute I focus on gardening, religion and/or politics. The latter I can understand - but gardening? This is a farm site and to be more specific it is a site about growing, cooking and eating healthy foods that are produced without the use of chemical pesticides, herbicides or fungicides. Im not complaining, Im simply stating a personal observation. I fear that we have sunk into an abyss of the one line abbreviated text message. In some ways it makes us good communicators. Unfortunately it doesnt make us very good thinkers. We no longer spend enough time reading or gathering sufficient data on important topics to consider the preponderance of the issues. We end up knowing a little about a lot but not much about anything. We are a generation of headlines - I suspect very few read the second paragraph on page six. This is unfortunate because all too often the headline is a misleading spin designed to attract the readers attention. This site has been on line for a year and for me it has been a wonderful year. I have met in person and/or communicated with great folks from all over the world. I have learned much - not only about gardening but about people. Some things I already knew - the facts were just reconfirmed. Its interesting to note the majority of my followers are women. Children, pets and friends are important and in that order. Husbands/boy friends are seldom, if ever mentioned and almost never show up in family pictures on Facebook. These are neither good nor bad things -just statistics and observations. The one thing I regret in the past year is that I have been too much of a wimp, too sensitive to the comments and concerns of others. I tried to please everybody and not offend anyone. Of course, I failed on both fronts and as most people know you can not please everyone all the time. The most important thing about the site is that it has been a lot of fun for Bruce and me. I always look forward to and appreciate your comments, suggestions and questions. Have a good one. Russ 2014-01-25
