Early this morning, just before my wife left for work, she turned to look at me, with just a hint of a tear in her eye, and said, Honey, I want to thank you, for your service to our country. Im proud of you. She said, You volunteered in that terrible time, and I know that it changed your life, forever. I quickly turned away from her, for I didnt want her to see the tear that came to my eye. In an instant, my mind took me on a three year journey, a panorama of scenes and voices from another place and time. I got to walk and talk with old friends, and say goodbye to others. I was flooded with memories that are always lying just below the surface, waiting to be summoned by a familiar sound, or, smell........I will stop here.....and just say, She was right, it did change my life forever, but, at the end of those years, I joined the ranks of those who are members, in good standing, of the most exclusive club on planet earth, I became a Veteran of the Armed Forces of The United States of America. I consider it a great honor, and a privilege, to be counted among these brave and dedicated men and women. Being a veteran carries a pride with it that is unknown to those who have never worn the uniform.....On this day, I say thank you, to ALL the other veterans of the United States, THANK YOU, so very much for your service and dedication......And, as I let this tear just go ahead and run on down my cheek....to my wife , I say, Thank you, honey, for remembering, and for the kind, gentle, way that you let me know that my small contribution was important to you.......I love you too....
