Earth. Before the war. New York. Before I was born. A place Ive only seen pictures of. I know you, but weve never met. Im with you, but I dont know your name. I know Im dreaming. But it feels like more than that; it feels like a memory. How can that be? March 14th, 2077. Five years since the mandatory memory wipe, and Im still haunted by these dreams. Victoria and I were assigned together. In just two more weeks to go, our mission here will be finished, and well join the others. But the questions I ask, she doesnt. The things I wonder about, she wont. By now, its already been over sixty years since the fleet of alien Scavengers, or just simply the Scavs for short, destroyed our moon. Forced to leave their own dying planet, they came to take ours. Without our moon, Earth was thrown into chaos. Massive earthquakes toppled cities within hours. Equally-as-massive tsunamis wiped out whatever remained. Then came the invasion. We did what we had to do in order to win: we used the nukes. As a result, we won the war, but only at the great cost of losing our planet. Left it contaminated. Most of it uninhabitable. What remained of our humanity had to leave the Earth. For that, we built the Tet, our mission control, a massive, tetrahedral-shaped, and temporary, space-station before our migration to a colony built and placed on Titan, the largest moon of Saturn. Everyones there now. Well, almost everyone. Until our tour is complete, Vika and I do our job: we defend and protect the Hydrorigs, which convert seawater into fusion energy for the new colony. The survival of humanity depends on it. However, remnants of the Scavenger army continue to disrupt the operation. They attack our security drones at night, and try to kill me during the day. Theres still some fight left in them, but I dont know why. Mission says we have done well; that we are an effective team. Vikas my communications officer; she keeps an eye on me. I handle drone maintenance; the drones watch everything. Vika cant wait to go. Me, Im not so sure. I just cant shake the feeling that, in spite of all thats happened, Earth is still my home. --Jack Harper, Tech-49, beginning monologue, Oblivion from the tenth of April in 2013. Earth. After the war. Three years have passed since I last saw your face. I often wonder if I come to you at night, in dreams, during the day, as memories. Do I haunt your hours the way you haunted mine? And I wonder if you see me when you look at her. If we have souls, theyre made of the love we share. Undimmed by time. Unbound by death. For three years, I searched for the house he built. I knew it had to be out there. Because I know him. I am him. I am Jack Harper. And I am home. --Jack Harper, Tech-52, concluding monologue, Oblivion from the tenth of April in 2013.
