Earthquake. Dont panic: `If you encounter a bear in the woods, - TopicsExpress

Earthquake. Dont panic: `If you encounter a bear in the woods, what will you do? A man was asked to imagine the situation and the reply came too pat. `What have I to do, bear will do it all. It sounds a bit perverse to prelude a tragedy with a joke. Over eight lakh people may die if it really happens. All Himalayan states (ours included) are vulnerable to what is feared to be our last day on the earth. The doomsday. National Disaster Management Authoritys Vice Chairman M Shashidhar Reddy comes out with a heart-stilling news. God save us. We are sitting on a volcano and can be blown apart any time. The news has sent across waves of fear. It has triggered a debate in our disaster management departments as to how to tackle the challenge. Our civil engineers, architects, town-planners have a great job at hand. They are exploring new means to reduce the damage. Newer techniques will have to be adopted so that our houses, offices, business complexes are stronger than ever. Well, that is good to avoid risk and minimise the extent of damage. We have been cautioned earlier too by geologists and seismologists to brace up ourselves for an imminent disaster. But the latest research findings have rendered all caution (ironically) meaningless. From extreme worry we are tossed to extreme carefreeness. Now all panic seems to have evaporated at once. In a way, we are safe as we cant do anything now. Safety measures always have a role in all man-made or natural disasters, but there comes a stage when a man tends to transcend all rational means that otherwise can protect him. Sure that never means we sit on our hands and let things happen. A sense of preparedness on our part can come with a sense of safety, but if a disaster of that magnitude strikes, what can save us? We the helpless creatures stand even more helpless at the hands of some invisible forces which operate without our knowledge and (moreso) without our permission. The good news is that none knows (not even experts) when exactly will that doom-spelling moment come (which we pray may not come ever). Had we known the time, the day, that would end our life before it is otherwise destined to end. So the prudence lies in `letting the bear do and sleep well.
