Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has said that any attempt to force journalists to carry licences to be able to report will simply be an attempt to control what they say. Yesterday, South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) acting Chief Operations Officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng said that he believes that reporters should be licenced so that they could lose the right to work if they do not report properly. However, Malema says that he is quite happy with how journalists are operating in South Africa at the moment. He said that the licences would be an attempt to censor and silence the media and that that is against the spirit of the country’s constitution. Malema declared that such action will never be supported by the EFF. In explaining the licences, Motsoeneng said that they will work in the same way that they do for doctors and lawyers.
