Economic injustice lies at the heart of what is happening to poor black Americans, as well as to poor white Americans. Yet the right has been using race to divide Americans as long as anyone can remember, stoking fear in the white working class that black Americans are taking their tax dollars and making their streets unsafe. The reality is: (1) most poor people in America are white, not black or Latino, (2) most crime is white on white or black on black, (3) the biggest gains for working class whites have come when working class and poor blacks have joined them in political coalition for better jobs and wages, and (4) the only way we can countervail against the billionaires, CEOs, and Wall Street titans who are taking over this country is to stand clearly and firmly together.
