Ed Bruce singing My First Taste of Texas, one of my favorite songs. I finished a semester at McNeese and prepared for a new adventure. One that would take me to Houston to visit my sister Liz and her husband Dudley Watts. Afterwards I would leave to begin a journey that would forge a life changing adventure. An odyssey where I would not just take a job but begin a career. I would meet the love of my life and we would share a life with the four children we had made together. I said goodbye to my Mom and Dad as well as the brother Rodney, whom I had traveled every morning for past many months going to school. There were very few four lane highways back then. I traveled Highway 90 through Beaumont and spent 2 days with Dud and Liz. The trip to Irving passed through Dallas. I choose to travel on Industrial Boulevard from Highway 75 going toward Irving when I arrived in Dallas. My 1955 Ford two-door developed a flat in the shadows near the triple overpass. It was mid afternoon in June and there weren’t any clouds to hide the sun. It was hot. The smell of fresh asphalt permeated the air around me. I had to be in Irving by 5 PM to meet a woman name Thelma. She had a garage apartment and so far I had only had a casual conversation by phone with her. So I hurried and replaced the tire. I made it to St Clair Drive in Irving and pulled into the driveway. I had a little more than an hour to spare. A short visit with the owner Thelma and her room mate, a blond whose name I can’t recall, paid my rent and went to explore this one room garage I had just rented. Unloaded and put my things away and left to go out to eat. I entered into Irving on Highway 356 and noticed on the edge of town a hamberger joint named Cree Mel, advertised as a rootbeer place. I went in and introduced myself to the manager, Wayne something or another. Cree Mel was a car hop place like the one we saw in later years on Happy Days. There were several young women working the car hop scene. Some young women and I shared more than a friendly glance. This was my first day in Texas on my own. I fell in love with the place on this first day. And when I met her, she indeed had blue eyes and golden hair as the song says. youtube/watch?v=25OMBZM-S4Q
