Editorial Crackdown in Hong Kong Just days after Chinese - TopicsExpress

Editorial Crackdown in Hong Kong Just days after Chinese Premier Li Keqiang promised to tackle the unrest in Hong Kong in a passive manner; police have reportedly used excessive force to flush out demonstrators camping on streets. Alleged human rights violations were witnessed as police tried to clear an underpass near the government building that had been in the protesters custody for the last several weeks. The sit-in campaign in Hong Kong, now in its fourth week, had brought to fore the fundamental differences between the pro-democracy camp and the powers-that-be in Beijing over the next phase of elections to elect a new chief executive for the territory in 2017. Though officials had tried to do whatever damage control they could to pacify the people and the media at large scenes of crackdown and use of force could bring a new lease of life to the movement, which otherwise had lost its steam. Student and corporate unions who had gone into talks with the authorities concerned before the crackdown are likely to revisit their resolve, and take a more rigid stance in times to come. The dispute as far as political and administrative aspects are concerned is far from addressed. Hong Kong Chief Executive CY Leung had said that China will abide with the Basic Law, as negotiated at the time of the handover of the territory by Britain, and that pertains to supervising the poll process by a committee that will vet all potential candidates. After weeks of upheavals, the issue remains far from being resolved, Who will make the next move?
