Editorial Human rights for human beings only! Human rights groups condemned on Saturday hanging of two convicted terrorists after lifting a moratorium on executions. The UN human rights office also appealed to Pakistan on Friday to refrain from resuming executions after the massacre of 141 people in a Peshawar school, saying this would not stop terrorism and might even stir a cycle of revenge. In his remarks sent to journalists, Ruport Colville the spokesman of UN human rights office said: There is no evidence that imposing the death penalty has any impact whatsoever in deterring terrorism or other serious crimes. He expressed the hope that the perpetrators or planners of the mass school killing be brought to justice as soon as possible, while urging restraint by the Pakistani security forces. It is in fact a double speak, as sending the murderers and savages to gallows after following due course of law is indeed dispensation of justice; therefore the question of restraint in this regard does not arise. Amnesty International also criticized the lifting of moratorium on executions, which was placed by the then government in 2008. In a statement it said: Executing people was not the answer to combating terrorism. European Union has also criticized the lifting of moratorium on executions, which was placed by the then government in 2008. The question is why dont they criticize the US, where most of the states have the law for executions of those on the death row? Even those states with ban on executions act on the orders of the Supreme Court when a criminal under federal subject is given death sentence. It should be borne in mind that human rights are for human beings only. Those who do not believe in human values, democracy, constitution and rule of law; who do no respect rights of others and use violent and barbaric means to impose their views on others are not supposed to enjoy the human rights enshrined in the Constitution. But this simple fact is not understood by the human rights organizations, or they do not want to understand so that they could advance agenda of the big powers or their alien masters. In 2009 when military operation was conducted in Swat, Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) had stated that human rights violations have taken place during the military operation against militants and extremists in Swat. Earlier, HRCP has been criticizing the government for failure in protecting life and property of the citizens. Pakistan Army and other security forces were at that time also in a state of war with the militants, who had been attacking their convoys, training camps and check posts. Terrorists had made lives of the residents miserable and unlivable; they destroyed CD shops, barbers shops, schools, and beheaded people. The non-governmental organizations or human rights organizations had then acted as silent spectators. Only when the thugs established their courts and called the media men, analysts and citizens to face the trials, they started opposing the militants. Anyhow, in Ireland, Sri Lanka and elsewhere there was let up in terror-related acts after military operations were conducted. When Sri Lankan forces were on the verge of final victory, India, the US, the EU, the UN, Amnesty International were suggesting to Sri Lankan government that it should enter into dialogue with the rebels who were using thousands of innocent citizens as human shield. However, President Rajapakse had managed to cut the supply line of Tigers including the main source of supply of arms to Tigers from India and Sri Lankan diaspora in Singapore. Sri Lankans had suffered enough from Tamil Tigers for three decades, who were more ferocious than Pakistani militants. Sri Lankan president had neither listened to anybody nor he accepted any outside pressure to stop operation against Elam, and was thus able to end the long nightmare for the Sri Lankans. Even today Sri Lankan government is drawing flak from European Union that it had violated international law. Pakistans civil and military leadership is determined to take all steps to rid the country of terrorism. It should not buckle under pressure or listen to sermons from HRW or European Union, as progress of the country as well as prosperity of the people hinges on peace and tranquility in the country.
