Editors dare militant’s threat; sells newspapers Govt. remains impotent even after knowing the mobile telephone numbers of the militants IMPHAL (IT News): Imphal based newspapers today dared militant’s threat by personally engaging themselves in selling their newspaper in the heart of Imphal today morning. The historic situation arose after newspaper hawkers stopped distributing newspapers following serious threats from a newly formed armed group. Similar threats were also received by the Imphal based newspaper editors. Some of them were even threatened that their family members will not be spared. The Okram Ibobi Singh led government had been informed regarding the matter some 5 days back. Mobile telephone numbers the militants used to threaten the editors and hawkers had been already reported to Chief Minister and the Home Minister, but there were no report of any action against them so far. Talking to Imphal Times, a senior editor said that after the mobile numbers were reported to the police, the militants made countless number of calls to the editors and newspaper hawkers. So far no one involved has been arrested. Editor of Huiyen Lanpao Manipuri edition, Hemanta Ningombam while talking to the Hindu paper said that he could sell over 6,000 copies within one hour today. Editors of other newspapers also sold dailies along with him. He said that more editors are likely to join them on Sunday. The sale of the newspapers by the editors will continue till the All Manipur Newspapers Sale and Distributors Association is allowed to distribute the copies. Meanwhile, Kangujam Tombi, a senior citizen while talking to Imphal Times appreciated the move by the editors and said that the people are with the media. He expressed shock over the irresponsive attitude of the government and said, “Is the government’s people behind this threat to the media fraternity?” As the threats to media occurred while the media is focusing on the disputed border fencing episode along the Indo-Myanmar Border, Tombi mused- “Is this a new technique to divert the issue?”.
