She served as Foreign Minister of Somaliland from 2003 until 2006, and had previously served as Somalilands Minister of Family Welfare and Social Development. In 2002, Edna founded the first Maternity Hospital in Hargeisa. The hospital now has two operating theatres, laboratory, library, computer center and a complete wing dedicated to training nurses and midwives.
