Education & Water On Tap In The Village Of Arai June 13 2013 - It has been a truly busy couple of weeks in Cambodia; we have been inching ever closer to the completion of the primary school in the village of Arai. Following closely behind the school project was the deployment of several fresh water wells for families in the village of Arai. A fundraising even took place in San Diego, CA was able to raise enough support to fund the construction of a handful of wells for the families and children of Arai. Work began on the first well on June 13th and all are expected to be completed by June 17th with additional plans to implement more wells in the area in the next several months. The first wells are serving as a baseline for future water projects. The area where Arai is located is known to be problematic at best when it comes to procuring water, with several water well construction companies simply refusing to try to drill for water in the area. However, armed with a little bit of education and local knowledge we believe we will have a fair amount of success in locating and extracting fresh water for the villagers. Wells in Arai are currently being drilled to 142m in depth or more, which should allow the wells to continue to operate in the dry season should the ground water level drop. The initial installations have been placed around the village on both sides of the mountains that divide the village for us to study and observe so that in the future we can continue to place wells in the best possible locations to serve the community. On June 10th the last payment for the school was received from our partner organization, Children of Arai Village based in Holland. We eagerly headed out to the village to meet with the contractors to help give them that final push towards completing the school. We are anxiously awaiting the completion of the school so the children can begin studying in proper classrooms, saying goodbye to the old mud floors and open walled classrooms that served as their school for the past five years. The three classrooms recently had the last of the roof completed, and the final sections of the walls were closed in. All that remains is the pouring of the cement floors and for the desks and school furniture to be moved in. We are very pleased with the recent developments in Arai and for the first time in a long time the future for the children in Arai looks very optimistic.
