Edward Brooke was the only African American US Senator during my childhood. I remember him as a man of character who epitomized East Coast liberal Republicans during the 60s and 70s. Mr. Brook passed away today in Florida. He was. Brooke served in the Senate representing Massachusetts from 1967-1979. He was the first popular elected African American US Senator. He was also elected Massachusetts attorney general in 1962 and reelected two years later, he was the first African-American to hold that office in any state. Since he served there have been six African-American senators: three Illinois Democrats, Carol Moseley Braun, Barack Obama, and Roland W. Burris; Massachusetts Democrat Mo Cowan; South Carolina Republican Tim Scott, and New Jersey Democrat Cory Booker. Before then the first two African-American senators represented the state of Mississippi during the Reconstruction: Hiram Rhodes Revels (appointed) and Blanche Bruce (elected by the State legislature).
