Edward Hoyt Civil War Diary At sea sailing north to New York January 4, 1865 Cloudy and windy with a heavy sea and rough sailing all day – the wind rose in the night. I am seasick all day and did not leave my bunk to eat even one meal. 24 hours of rough seas and out of sight of land – passed cape Hatteras about 10 or 11 last night and cape Henry this morning some time. January 5, 1865 A fine morning and clear the wind dropped off about midnight and now the water is still and it is splendid sailing and we are making good time – we pass Barnegat Lighthouse about three today and land is in sight along the shore of N Jersey and a beautiful time to run and the Gen. Barnes is counting the knots in good style – we pass the narrows about 10 oclock and drop anchor at a little before 11 – so we are safely anchored in New York Harbor.
