Egypt’s most prominent activist Alaa Abdel-Fattah greets people prior to a conference held at the American University in Cairo, near Tahrir Square, #Egypt. Abdel-Fattah, a symbol of Egypt’s 2011 uprising, has spent time in prison under four different Egyptian governments. A Cairo court ordered him freed on bail on Sept. 15, 2014. He is facing a retrial on a 15-year prison sentence for violating a draconian law that bans protests without prior government approval. Abdel-Fattah, who has emerged as a powerful voice for civil rights in Egypt, is a member of one of Egypt’s most prominent activist families. His sister Sanaa is currently in jail for violating the protest law.
