Ekiti monarchs, youths protest relocation of army barracks ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Traditional rulers in Ido/Osi Local Government Area of Ekiti State on Thursday protested against the relocation of Nigerian Army Brigade Headquarters from Aaye-Ekiti to Ipoti-Ekiti. The traditional rulers, led by their chairman and the Olojudo of Ido, Oba Ayorinde Faboro, accused the former Minister of Police Affairs, Navy Captain Caleb Olubolade (retd.), of masterminding the relocation to his home town in Ipoti Ekiti. The youths in the town took to the street as early as 7am and blocked the Ado-Ifaki-Ido highway forcing many commuters to take alternative routes. They carried placard with various inscriptions including, “We are ready to defend what belongs to us,” “Olubolade is behind the illegal relocation,” and “Olubolade come off Aaye-Ekiti Army Barracks project.” Many stranded travelers begged the protesting youths to no avail. Addressing journalists in Aaye-Ekiti, Oba Faboro said the relocation of the barracks from Aaye amounted to stealing. He said, “As a minister of police affairs, there are so many things he (Olubolade) could have done for Ipoti, his hometown. Relocating the barracks from Aye amounts to stealing. You cannot transfer something allocated to one community overnight. “This community has paid its dues. It is offensive, we are not happy about it. We don’t want problems between communities in Ekiti. The Federal Government should relocate it back to Aye. “We are also appealing to Governor Ayodele Fayose to intervene. We don’t want a community of aggrieved Ekiti people.” Responding to questions, the Alaaye of Aaye, Oba Theophilus Ogunbiyi, said Olubolade, when confronted at a meeting, denied relocating the barracks. “He (Olubolade) told me the one in Ipoti is a branch of the barracks and that it will not affect the one in Aaye. I asked if it is the branch that should first kick off before the main barracks.” The monarchs urged the presidency and the National Assembly to probe the cause of failure of execution of the barracks in Aaye as directed by the Federal Government in 2013. They also demanded a probe into the N431.9 million allocated and released for the execution of the project in 2013.
