El Grito De Dolores ¡Viva! Miguel Hidalgo was a priest from Guanajuato who advocated and launched for Mexican Independence from Spain. It was time to break off the 300 years of ruling by Spain in Mexico, redistribution of land, and racial equality. The Mexican rebellion was launched by Hidalgo with his “Grito de Dolores”. Even though Hidalgo was later captured and executed, his rebellion continued. It was until the year of 1821 that Mexico finally gained their Independence from Spain. Today, the celebration begins on the eve September 15 leading into the 16. The same bell Hidalgo used to call his congregation is rung by the president and his same cries are repeated to the people. ¡Viva Mexico!
