ElectromagneticHealth.org LEARN MORE About the Emerging EMF Public Health Issue from Scientists, Physicians and Other Experts at ElectromagneticHealth.org This site is for people who want to learn how to assess home and office environments for electromagnetic fields, and how to remediate electromagnetic safety problems if they exist. Our philosophy is that one should first learn how to clean up one’s personal environment, and especially one’s sleeping and office environments where one spends long hours. To that end, we offer you a selection of high value-added and economical measurement and safety resources screened and described by expert EMF consultant, Stan Hartman of Radsafe in Boulder, CO. For more information about electromagnetic factors in health please read the Book, Public Health SOS: The Shadow Side of the Wireless Revolution, available atElectromagneticHealth.org. There you will also find much valuable educational content on this emerging public health issue. Learn—and come back often! 1) Meters. You’ll find a range of meters and detectors here for electric, magnetic and radiofrequency fields, so you can start becoming an EMF detective. It is only when you measure the fields that you can know what fields are present, and how, and from what direction, to remediate with assurance. See Meters. 2) Bed Canopies. Create a bedroom sleep sanctuary so you rest undisturbed by electromagnetic fields and wake up more refreshed in the morning. People who are electrically sensitive find shielding bed canopies essential, as do high performance athletes and, increasingly, business executives bathed in frequencies all day. See Bed Canopies. 3) Shielding Fabrics. Shielding fabric by the foot can be used to line curtains, walls and can even be put under carpets or desk chair pads to shield from the Wi-Fi of neighbors downstairs.See Shielding Fabric. 4) Shielding Films. Placing plastic shielding film on glass windows can significantly block out ambient radiofrequency radiation-from where it comes into the building most easily. See Shielding Films. 5) Shielding Paints. Metallic water-based paint can be placed under latex paints or wallpapers. Suitable for many types of exterior surfaces as well. Caution: Needs grounding and should not be installed without the services of an electrician. Also, do not put shielding paint on the walls if the room will contain RF emitting devices, such as computers, cell phones, wi-fi, compact fluorescent bulbs, etc. See Shielding Paints. 6) “Dirty Electricity” Meter and Filters. Increasingly, high frequency transients get on wall wiring and create unhealthy fields. This is especially so in downtown urban environments or where one is operating electronic equipment of various kinds. To see if you have “dirty electricity”, purchase a Dirty Power Meter, then neutralize transients by putting at least one Graham-Stetzer filter in one of the wall sockets on each circuit. See Dirty Electricity Filters and Meter. 7 ) Reducing Cell Phone Headsets, Cell Phone Cases This is the best headset-the one where the sound travels up the plastic air tube limiting the amount of radiation to your brain from either cell phones or portable phones. If you must use a cell phone, using this headset will reduce radiation to the brain significantly. Hands Free RF Reducing Headset. See RF-Reducing Cell Phone Headsets. 8 ) Cell Phone Warning Signage. See Cell Phone Warning Signage. 9 ) Books and Other Resources. See Books and Other Resources. 10) Grounding Devices. Grounding Devices. Return Policy: 14 days to return unopened items in new condition for refund of purchase price less shipping and handling and 20% restocking fee. No returns on paints or on custom goods such as cut fabrics and films. To return items contact [email protected] for authorization and shipping instructions. Products 1) Meters. 3-Axis RF Meter Very Sensitive, Affordable, Feature-Packed RF/MW Meter Covering a bandwidth of 50 MHz to 3.5 GHz, digital and analog, this instrument is incredibly versatile. It’s 3-axis, which means you won’t miss brief pulses that could disappear before you turn the meter to check another direction, but you can also select one axis at a time to help locate the source of the radiation. With 2½ samples/second it’s also fast, which is very important when tracking microwaves. But there’s more. It has a selectable audio alarm with adjustable sensitivity, selectable auto-off, andbacklighting that automatically turns off after 30 seconds. Its 4-digit LCD display reads in either mV/m, A/m, W/cm², or W/m². The display also includes an analog bar graph, and is switch-selectable between instantaneous value, maximum value, or average value. But there’s more still - it also has a 200 point manual memory function, and is extremely sensitive. On the millivolt per meter scale its sensitivity is: 38 mV/m to 11 V/m (equivalent to .38 nanoWatt/cm² to 30 microWatt/cm²). It’s accuracy, incidentally, is a respectable ± 2.4 dB or better. Power is from a standard 9V battery, giving about 15 hours of continuous use. Comes with a 1-year warranty. Quick Start Instructions for 3-Axis RF Meter (pdf) 3-Axis RF Meter(Cat. #WAH495) …………… $199.95 8 GHZ RF METER Very Wide Frequency Range Extremely wide frequency rage radiofrequency (RF) meter—from 10MHz to 8 GHz. An exceptional value for the price in terms of the range of frequencies covered. Will pick up the new 5.8 GHz phones as well as other RF equipment such as DECT portable phones, wireless routers, baby monitors, etc. Will also measure some radar exposures that sweep through certain communities. 3-axis (isotropic) measurement. Extremely sensitive: 20 mV/m to 108 mV/m (or, 0.1 nanoWatt/cm2 to 3 milliWatt/cm2). Measures exposures in V/m, A/m, W/m² or W/cm². Displays instant value, max value or average value, where the average value interval is adjustable from 4 seconds to 15 minutes. Excellent ±1dB accuracy or better. One year factory warranty. (Uses 9V battery) 8 GHz RF Meter (Cat. #WAH489) …………… $499.00 ELF GaussMeter For finding and measuring AC magnetic fields accurately and quickly, its hard to surpass this meter, for size and price. Designed by FW Bell, one of the best names in the business, this is a professional meter at an affordable price. It has the same accuracy and resolution (0.1 mG) as the earlier 4080 model, with a prettier case, a little higher range (599 mG), and a smarter display that includes Minimum, Maximum, and Peak Hold, a relative mode (for measuring field changes relative to a field level other than zero), and selectable milligauss or microtesla readout. It’s 3-axis design also lets you select any of the X, Y, or Z axes individually, making it easier to find the orientation of magnetic fields and their likely sources. It operates on four AAA batteries, with a jack for an external 5 VDC adapter (not included), and a USB port for operating on USB power (cable not included). FW Bell has also decided with this upgrade to raise the low-frequency filter to 30 instead of 25 Hz, which makes it more stable during movements in the field. 4180 ELF GaussMeter (Cat. #WAH171N) ………….. $325.95 DIGITAL COMBINATION METER (Magnetic & Electric Fields) Accurate Single-Axis Gaussmeter and AC Electric Field Meter This German meter, by GigaHertz Solutions, offers 2% accuracy (±20 digits) at 50/60 Hz, with a very flat frequency response, within 1 dB from about 16 Hz to 2,000 Hz (printed as a graph on the cover of the case). It’s overall sensitivity is much wider, though, from about 5 Hz to 7,000 Hz (at 3 dB accuracy). Its very low frequency cutoff makes it versatile but slow (on the magnetic setting), because whenever you move it you have to wait a couple seconds for it to settle down and give you an accurate reading. Remember that with a single-axis meter you really need to take three readings 90º from each other (find the orientation with the highest reading and visualize the meter flat against one surface of the corner of a box, then take readings flat against each of the other two sides) to get the true flux density. If two of the readings are much lower than the highest one, you can usually get away with just increasing the highest reading a bit and calling it right, but if one or more of the lower readings is close to the highest one, you need to do the calculation - square each reading, add them together, and take the square root of the sum. Its magnetic resolution is extremely fine at 10 microgauss, but its top end at 20 mG will leave you wondering at an out-of-range indicator in areas with stronger fields. Another slow-down for those used to readings in milligauss is that this meter reads in nanotesla. That can be remedied by putting a decimal point on the display with a felt-tip pen between the second and third numerals from the right - as long as you remember to ignore it when reading electric fields. The electric field setting ranges from 1 to 2,000 volts per meter, and actually uses the operator’s body in its detection, making it unique but a bit awkward. You have to plug a ground wire (generously long, at least) into the meter, with the other end grounded somewhere, and always keep the wire behind you while you hold the meter close to your body, making it necessary to get up close and personal with whatever you’re measuring. This does away with the need for a long handle so your body doesn’t interfere with the field, but since no one’s bodily electric field is exactly the same, how accurate can it be on the electric field setting? It is an accurate gaussmeter, however. As with many of this company’s instruments, it’s well-made but design flaws limit its usefulness in the field. Their more expensive combination meter is actually less useful than this one because it’s bandwidth is too broad for ELF testing, which is what most AC gaussmeters are designed and used for. The audio output of this meter, incidentally, is not really sensitive enough to be very useful. The much cheaper Gauss Master, and Budget Buzz Stick (see below), are much better at audio indication of magnetic fields. All in all, for the price, this is a very useful and accurate, if slow, gaussmeter, and also actually measures electric fields, if you don’t mind the inconveniences. It operates on a standard 9 volt battery, and comes with an excellent, very informative manual and a 2 year warranty. Digital Combination Meter (Cat. #WAH480) …… $189.00 BUDGET BUZZ STICK (Magnetic Fields) The Intimate Sounds of ELF Magnetic Fields This little unit won’t actually measure anything numerically, but is a great sniffer-outer of magnetic fields, letting you listen in to their hums, buzzes, clicks and squeals. It will even give you a relative indication of their field strength - louder means stronger. And because it doesn’t have to measure anything, it’s very fast, giving you a real-time indication of your ELF magnetic environment. It will show you magnetic phenomena that a gaussmeter is incapable of detecting, like very low 1 Hz clicks from a digital clock, computer clock, or thermostat, pulses from a cell phone battery, and very strange noises from some GFCI outlets that may make you wonder if there’s a listening device in your kitchen. The pitch of the sounds can even be like an audio frequency counter, giving you an indication of what frequency spikes and harmonics are present. The little pickup coil on a 2-foot cable can also find fields in hard-to-reach spots you could never get a gaussmeter into, much less read it. There’s a mono earphone jack that cuts off the speaker if you want to listen privately or don’t want to scare the cat. And if grandma has trouble hearing phone conversations, you can always attach the little coil’s suction cup to the back of your phone, turn up the Buzz Stick’s volume, and everyone can listen in. It uses a standard 9 volt battery. Budget Buzz Stick (Cat. #WAH175-B) ……………… $16.94 CELL PHONE DETECTOR High sensitivity, wide frequency range RF detector, good value. Frequency range 50MHz ~ 6.0GHz covering all types of wireless networks, hidden microphones and surveillance cameras and cellular phones. Large LED light bar indicates radiation strength. LED numeral indicates sensitivity setting. Features a silent vibration mode, beeping alarm mode, and an earphone for silent/covert detections. Includes built-in rechargeable battery pack with low battery indication, and charger. Improved Cell Phone Detector (Cat. #WAH455) ……… $149.95 GAUSS MASTER™ (Magnetic Fields) The Little Meter That Can This meter has actually been around a long time. It was originally called “Dr. Gauss,” and is probably the cheapest actually useable gaussmeter available (there are cheaper ones, but the key word is “useable”). Don’t depend on it for accuracy, though the analog meter is calibrated in milligauss, but it will definitely show you where magnetic fields are and give you a ballpark sense of their strength. It has a selectable super-sensitive setting (1 mG full scale); the normal scale is 1-10 mG. It also has a very useable audio output, which can impress children more than a meter needle when they hear it squeal insanely close to the microwave oven or the electric range. Some annoying things about it are that it has no power LED (it actually does have one, but it’sinside the case, and you’d have to drill a hole right above it to see it), or anything else to tell you that it’s on if you’re in a low-field environment. That wouldn’t be much of a problem except that it shuts itself off automatically after five minutes, so you can sometimes think the fields are very low when the meter has just said goodnight. You can get around that, though, by just pressing the ON button more than once every 5 minutes (holding it down is what selects the more sensitive range). Another annoyance is that the audio output can’t be turned off. The Gauss Master can also be affected by higher frequency radiation (cell phones and other RF), but this can be remedied if you suspect it by finding the highest reading and then shielding the meter with your body - holding it close and turning around in a circle (always keeping the meter oriented in the same absolute direction). If the readings don’t change significantly, you can usually assume that RF is not a problem. Remember, as with any single-axis meter, to take three readings 90º from each other (see the DIGITAL COMBINATION METER above). It uses a standard 9 volt battery, and comes with useful instructions on how to conduct a magnetic field survey. Gauss Master (Cat. #WAH130) ……………………………. $34.95 2) Bed Canopies. SCOTCHTINT™ SHIELDING WINDOW FILM Windows are the most important areas of a room to shield, because they’re the principal portals for RF/MW radiation. This window film will reduce exposure to radiation in the 30 MHz to 4.5 GHz range (the frequency limits of the testing) - by more than 22 dB at cell phone frequencies. You simply cut it to size, peel the backing, wet it, and apply, then squeeze out any air pockets. It’s good to cut it a little large so you can then use an exacto knife to trim it as close to the frame as possible, especially along the vertical edges. In addition to RF shielding, this film reduces heat gain in the summer by up to 79%, and heat loss in the winter, and makes windows opaque from the outside when the sun is on them, without reducing visibility from the inside. This can mean saving about one ton of air conditioning for every 100 sq. ft. of sun-exposed glass, and a reduction of up to 30% of heat loss in the winter. It also reduces glare and blocks 98% of UV rays, protecting interior surfaces from fading. You can find professional installers in most areas if you don’t want to do it yourself. Sputter-coated with silver-indium to make it highly conductive (27 ohms/sq.), it makes an excellent electric field and RF shield. Five mil thick and easy to cut to cover car windows, VDT and TV screens, MW-oven windows, eyeglasses - even make a shield for your cell phone and portable phone. It’s heat-stable up to 80°C (176°F). The width is 2 feet - specify number of ft when ordering by quantity. Clear-Shield (Cat. WAH1210-24) …………. $29.95 per foot Microwave Absorbing Carbon Laminate Non-woven carbon fiber offers shielding as well as high microwave absorption. Appealing as a shielding option when you’d rather not use only reflecting shielding (to protect people in the vicinity whom the waves might be reflecting towards). The carbon material has a plastic laminate on it for ease of handling, reduced carbon dust and durability. Carbon base material (without plastic laminate): Width: 48 inch (1219 mm), Weight: 34 g/m², Thickness: 18 mil (0.445 mm), Resistivity: ~3 Ohms per square, Tensile: 47 N/15mm. Relatively hard, inflexible material compared to fabrics though very light weight. Air and light do not penetrate. Use to line walls or for partitions or to line heavy curtains. Please note, with some lighter weight shielding fabrics, which may not shield 100%, sometimes just using carbon laminate underneath the fabric to absorb stray microwaves can do the job. It is always best to purchase an Electrosmog Meter. to assess the RF/MV remediation results. Sometimes more than one layer of the carbon laminate is needed to reduce the microwaves to zero, but note with the carbon laminate this can be accomplished at a much lower cost than using multiple layers of the shielding fabrics. Also helpful to absorb stray microwaves on rooftops where an antenna has been placed. Place this absorber underneath a metal shield. Y-SHIELD Indoor/Outdoor Paint High Frequency Shielding Paint This is a water-based paint for shielding interior or exterior surfaces from radio frequency and microwave radiation up to 18 GHz (see graph below), reducing RF/MW by 99.99% (40 dB) with one layer. With a pure acrylic binder, it adheres well to masonry, cement, plaster, construction board, polystyrene, latex paint, and many other surfaces, is frost-resistant, dries quickly, cleans up with water, and comes ready to use. The surface of this paint is highly conductive (about 10 ohms per square), and attenuation is consistent no matter what the polarization of the signals because of its holohedral carbon structure, without fibers or meshes. About 10% of the shielding is accomplished through the carbon’s good RF dissipation, which reduces reflections from both outside and inside the area to be shielded. It does need to be grounded. It’s RoHS compliant, comes in black only, covers 50 to 100 square feet (5 to 10 square meters) per liter, and can be covered with latex paint, wallpaper, etc. It has a shelf life (unopened) of 15 months. The minimum temperature for applying it is 1°C (33.8°F), and it can be shipped in the winter or any other season. It weighs 3.2 pounds per liter. DIRTY POWER METER Low Frequency Noise Detector Not for testing Washington politicians, this meter lets you detect levels of dirty power in home or office wiring, which can be corrected by installing Graham-Stetzer Filters (see below). The filters mitigate low frequency noise between 4 and 100 kilohertz, and this meter is designed to measure microsurges – voltage spikes – in that frequency range and display them as a numerical equivalent, in volts per second, of such noise. No batteries are required – just plug it into a standard 2-or-3 prong or GFCI outlet and read the display. It works for 60 Hz, 120 Volt North American and 50 Hz, 240 Volt European systems (but an ordinary plug adapter is needed for European or other electrical outlets). By turning on various appliances (compact fluorescent bulbs, blenders, computers, laser printers, etc.) one at a time and taking readings, you can get a sense of which are the biggest polluters. The rule of thumb is that any outlet reading higher than 50 should get a filter – especially if it’s in an area frequently occupied (bedroom, office, etc.). High Frequency Pollution Meter for Wiring: With North American Plug (Cat. #WAH803-NA) ………………. $99.95 GRAHAM-STETZER FILTERS—ELECTROMAGNETIC POLLUTION REMOVERS Dirty Power Cleaner Wherever there are active dimmer switches, electric motors, fluorescent lights (including CFLs), transformers, and many other electric-noise producing products, you also find dirty power in the form of microsurges – spikes of higher-frequency on the normally extremely low frequency (ELF) power in our homes and offices. This higher-frequency noise has been associated with symptoms of electrosensitivity (skin rashes, insomnia, depression, headaches, inability to concentrate, memory problems, fatigue, etc.), and possibly even more serious diseases like cancer. These small filters, when inserted into wall outlets, reduce this higher frequency noise, resulting in relief for many people. They use no extra electricity but simply act to clean the electricity moving through the electrical system, which can make other electrical appliances run more efficiently and may actually reduce your utility bills. Each can easily be moved from one outlet to another as needed (for a detector of dirty power, see the DIRTY POWER METER above). Though they can be ordered one at a time, the normal package of 20 units will clean the power of an entire, average-size home or office. North American plug style: HF EMPOR x20 (Cat. #WAH801-NA) ……… $659.95 Extra GS Filters (each) (Cat. #WAH802-NA) …………. $35.95 7) Reducing Cell Phone Headsets, Cell Phone Cases. SHIELDED LEATHER CELLPHONE CASE While you can use this good-looking leather cell phone case in your pocket or purse, it is also useful for those wanting to put their cell phone in a holster attached to the belt. Very durable. Flap closes securely with a magnet. Belt clip can be horizontal or vertical. Shield your body from cell phone radiation! Very important for pregnant moms or couples wanting to conceive. Please note, the shielding is on the side of the case where the belt clip is. This shields the radiation on the side of your body (or the side of your purse facing your body), but still allows the phone to ring. If you want more complete shielding, we suggest you turn off the phone. Two sizes: Cellphone Holster Large (Cat. #WAH233-L) …… $49.95 Fits Blackberry 8300, Motorola Razr, and similar phones up to 4.5×2.6×0.6 inch (115 x 66 x 15mm). Cellphone Holster Small (Cat. #WAH233-S) ………$49.95 Fits most smaller phones up to 4.1×2.2×0.65 inch (104 x 56 x 16mm). SKIN-BLOK This is a very thin, transparent adhesive film that you peel off, cut to size and place over your cell phone. It incorporates a high performance shielding material providing 40+ dB attenuation. You can use this with many kinds of phones, such as flip phones and PDAs. Not for phones with touch screens, however. You get 2 pieces 2.75 x 4 inches. Place on the side of your phone that faces your head. The phone emits radiation not just from the antenna and this shielding material will lessen your exposure considerably. Yu can still pres the keys, fold up, recharge Skin-Blok (Cat. #WAH244) …………. $11.95 Want to cover your laptop screens, windows or even your microwave oven door? By this 11” Skin-Block™ material by the linear foot. Specific length you desire. Note that sometimes Moire patterns may occur with some digital displays due to mesh size. Skin-Blok Wide (Cat. #WAH245) ……….. $24.95 per lin foot. Air-Flow™ HANDS-FREE HEADSET The Safest Headset Available Normal wired headsets are much safer than wireless Bluetooth headsets, or no headset at all, but they can pick up stray radiation from the phone and from microwave radiation everywhere around us, and transfer it to the head. The Air-Flowtm headset sold here adds further protection by keeping all wires farther away. It uses a simple technology–a flexible, nonmetallic tube carries sound to your ear from the speaker, keeping potential radiative components away from your ear and brain. There are still some metallic components in the earpiece, but nothing electronic, and a small clip can be used to keep the wires to the tiny speaker and microphone away from your throat area. Tests have shown that even wired headsets can reduce radiation by 95-99%, but that reduction still begins from levels determined by the design of the phone – specifically, the levels of radiation from the phone’s antenna and the relationship between the phone’s antenna and the headset jack. This headset will reduce levels even further, no matter what the design of the phone. It can be used with phones (cell or cordless) that have 2.5 mm Universal headphone jacks (see below). A special adapter is required for most Nokia and some Ericsson phones. See Ferrite Bead, below, for extra protection. You can use this with the microphone on either side. Also features an adjustable boom microphone for optimum voice output and a four-foot cord. Comfortable, solid feel that stays in place better than headsets with earbuds and goes on quicker. Standard 2.5mm 2-band jack for use with office, home, cellular or wireless phones. (black) Boom Headset 2.5mm (Cat. #WAH726-2.5) ………… $17.95 FERRITE SNAP BEAD An RF-Sponge for Wiring Headset wires (and anything else metallic) can become an antenna for high-frequency signals and noise, and transmit the RF to your head. A ferrite bead acts like a sponge for high frequencies and keeps them from continuing on to the ends of the wires closer to your body. The two halves of the small bead snap together around the wires and “soak up” the RF. They’re very light, grey in color, and about an inch long, with a minimum of 50 ohms impedence. They fit wires 5 mm in diameter or less (you can knot smaller wires at each end of the bead to keep it in place). Ferrite Snap Bead (Cat. #WAH238)………. $4.95 Ultra Low EMF Telephone This is a fabulous home or office phone for people who are sensitive to the strong magnetic fields associated with the handset, speakerphone or telephone base of many conventional telephones. Desktop or wall mount corded telephone (no microwaves) combined with a special ultra low EMF headset. This allows you to turn your fuses off from your bedside, and to turn them back on again easily if you need to get up in the middle of the night. Note: A Demand Switch requires installation by a trained electrician, but it is very worth it in our experience! Many people notice a difference in sleep quality in just one night with the fuse off to the bedroom! Try it first by turning off the fuses manually one night (except for the refrigerator), using a flashlight to get back to your bed, and see if you notice a difference. Then get serious and get an electrician to install a convenient Demand Switch at your bedside for your convenience. Unless one’s home wiring is encased in a protective metal cable (which most is not), we are surrounded by electric and magnetic fields from wall wiring as well as from any electric and electronic appliances in the bedroom. One is impacted from the wiring’s electric fields in your bedroom, in adjacent rooms, and from rooms above and below your bedroom room. Installing a Demand Switch assures you will not be exposed to these fields while you sleep, which will take a tremendous cumulative stress off of your body. One great feature of the Demand Switch is you can even adjust the activation threshold from 0-100 mA so low amperage devices such as luminescent nightlights can still be used. Note: What you cannot control are 3 phase (240V) circuits like the ones for your electric stove and dryer. -Installation Must be Done by a Licensed Electrician according to the electric code. -North American style only. -Warning stickers for breaker panel and receptacles must be installed and are included. -You will need a Demand Switch for each circuit you want to control. Most people turn off the electricity to the circuit that contains their bedroom, but all circuits could be turned off if the house is large and there are multiple bedrooms in other areas, if desired. - Installation must be done by a licensed electrician according to the electrical code for each State / Province (USA / Canada). - North American style only. - Warning stickers for breaker panel and receptacles are supplied and must be installed.
