Ely & District Table Tennis League. Press Report Week 13 In Division 1, Soham made a good start against title holders Ely 1 (formerly Haddenham 1) with Clive Woollard stealing a win against Liam Mohan. Mohan appeared to be in full control but that was all part of Woollard’s game plan and was purely waiting for the right time to assert his authority, taking the lead at the crucial stage and going on to win 11-9 in the deciding set. Woollard retained his momentum by also defeating Kieran Mohan but then came unstuck against Patrick Mohan who was determined to restore the family pride. Valiant efforts from Ian Boggie and Tony Everitt were not enough to stop Patrick who went on to win his three games for Ely. Everitt added a further point for Soham with a victory over Liam, who then recovered to overpower Boggie. Despite being put under pressure from both Boggie and Everitt, Kieran maintained his composure to add another two wins for Ely. In the doubles, Everitt and Woollard could do little to halt the famed Mohan pairing of Kieran and Patrick, with Patrick creating numerous chances for Kieran to hit the winning shots, which he did with ease and pushed Ely to a 7-3 victory. A busy week for Fulbourn 2 playing catch-up with their fixtures. Against Ellesmere 1 Nigel Bates, Peter Xie and Jannek Hauser encountered an off-colour Rhys Davies whose game couldnt have been helped by a persistent cough. Only Joanne Pettitt troubled the scorecard as she overcame Xie to avoid the whitewash. Against NCI, Fulbourn 2 played Richard Hatley instead of Xie. He joined Nigel Bates and Jannek Hauser in a comprehensive win against the NCI trio of Kelvin Mitchell, Tony Whiting and Howard Morley. Mitchell was his usual flamboyant self but it was Morley who posed the biggest threat to Fulbourn with four close games against Hatley before jumping into a 2-0 lead against Hauser. However, that was to no avail and Fulbourn proceeded to a 10-0 victory. Martin Spott and Andy Merritt gained three wins each for Fulbourn 1 in their 8-2 victory over Elsworth 1 Merritt took time to settle and after a difficult game against Roger Fensom, found himself 2-1 behind against Peter Goatly. He then blasted the last two games and all was well. Peters Zivtins found Fensom determined to get Elsworth on the scoresheet, and then, after an even start, he also fell away against Goatly. The doubles was exciting as Merritt and Spott achieved the win in four, just inside the 11 oclock time-out. In Division 2, to say Fulbourn 3 were “up for the match” against Impington 3 is an understatement. Tom Lodziak set the tone with a hard-fought win against Jeff Catlin, followed by determined hitting from Phil Hague and Dave Roitman which brought a 5-0 lead. Catlin came back to just get the better of Roitman before the Fulbourn onslaught resumed. The doubles was delicately poised at one all with Catlin and Colin Adams looking good but Fulbourn’s Lodziak and Hague regained the momentum to complete a 9-1 success. Rob Powell was summoned from the ranks to bolster Fulbourn 4 in the Christmas derby against Fulbourn 5 but he found Zak Davey irrepressible as the Fives took the lead. Back came the Fours for a 5-1 lead, with Powell beating Nick Gatherer in five plus two wins each for Jon Chapman and Dan Bates. However, the Fives hadnt finished. Julian Atudosie got his hitting game into gear against Powell, Davey worked out Chapmans game and came back from two down while Gatherer at last got his act together to overcome Bates 12-10 in the fifth. Each player had won at least once. It just remained for Davey and Gatherer to take the doubles to gain the Fives an honourable draw. Impington 2 entertained top-of-the-table Soham Comrades 2 and found themselves at the wrong end of a drubbing as the experience, fleet of foot and expertise of the visitors inflicted the dreaded whitewash. Try as hard as they could – and they really did, with the vastly superior shots from their opponents forcing some remarkable and impressive responses – Tony Taylor, Duncan Taylor and Mike Johnston found Robin Wallis, Bela Szabo and Kin Choi Chan just too good. Only the first game of the evening, when Tony Taylor lost 9-11 in the fifth to Rob Wallis, and Tony’s other two matches, had gone beyond three legs. In the doubles, Duncan Taylor and Johnston went 2-1 ahead only to lose the next two legs to go down in five.
