Emergency Alert: Imprisoned imam cannot eat, walk. Support Rally for Imam Jamil in DC - June 9, 2014 MAKE PHONE CALLS TO: Charles E. Samuels Jr. the Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons 202-307-3198; and to Lisa Gregory, Director of Health Services, North Central Region - 913-621-3939 Tell them you are calling regarding JAMIL AL-AMIN (#99974-555), with concerns regarding his deteriorating health condition and the fact that he is not receiving the adequate medical attention that is his right. If asked for your affiliation to the Imam, say brother or sister. == Assalaamu Alaikum (Greetings of Peace): El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (Malcolm X) had an insightful analogy which came to mind when I read the alert below from the Muslim Alliance In North America (MANA). The analogy went something like this: If a man stabs you in the back with a knife, and then just pulls it out an inch or two, does that constitute real progress? The report below provides more disturbing detail on the health crisis confronting our brother, Imam Jamil Abullah Al-Amin (the former H. Rap Brown) in Colorado. It could be argued that his jailors appear to be intent on allowing him to die a slow, agonizing death. The 4th rightly guided caliph of Islam (Ali ibn Abu Talib, r.a.) reportedly said: Three types of men [and women] are cut off from the blessings of Paradise: oppressors; those who aid and abet oppression; and those who tolerate oppression. This Islamically-based observation raises a rhetorical question: what is our responsibility in the face of injustice? What are we going to DO about it? The leaders of MANA are calling for us to make more telephone calls to the authorities (see below). We support that call, but in the same breath argue that this is not enough! If Imam Jamil is unable to eat, is having trouble breathing, and has great difficulty getting out of the bed, and STILL HAS NOT SEEN A DOCTOR - protest calls (while appropriate) are an inadequate response, in our humble view! We are calling for supporters of Imam Jamil (and other concerned folk) to join us for a critically needed public demonstration on Monday, June 9, at the federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) office in Washington, DC. It will be a 90 minute demonstration - from 11:30 AM to 1 PM. We have 5 DAYS...please mark your calendars and spread the word! Additional details will follow, inshaAllah. READ DETAIL UPDATES ON IMAM JAMILS HEALTH CONDITION BELOW: Dear Brothers and Sisters: As-Salaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah There is a sign of progress but Imam Jamils condition is still dire and in need of advocacy. Here is the latest update as of last night: 1- A dentist finally removed a broken tooth of Imam Jamil at its root and gave him antibiotics, but he still has not seen a physician. 2- He has not been able to eat and the dentist has agreed that the abscess (one on each side) caused damage, i.e., his inability to breathe and the total shut down of his body. 3- He is only able to get out of bed a few times a day, and he has not been strong enough to get any exercise. In fact, he is stating that he is having difficulty walking. 4- He had an X-ray approximately two weeks ago, but does not know the results. 5- His feet (top and bottom) are swollen, and that needs to be addressed by a physician. 6- A medical aide (Nigerian) went by his cell and talked to him through the cell door--a medical examination? 7- He is aware that some communication from a Congressional office was received on his behalf, but he doesnt know the details. 8- He has not had recreation since he has been ill, which indicates that the prison is aware of his illness. As you know, Imam Jamil is over 70 years old and needs emergency medical care without delay, in accordance with federal prison standards. His life is at risk.
