Emergency Preparedness Disasters can strike quickly and without warning. They can force you to evacuate your neighborhood or confine you to your home. Imagine yourself and your family after a major earthquake: your stranded, no food, no w...ater, no phone, and no plan. Ask yourself how will you find your family members? How will you know if your children or parents are safe? What would you do if basic services (water, gas, electricity, sewer or telephones) were cut off? Families can reduce the physical and emotional challenges experienced in a disaster by preparing in advance. Knowing what to do is your best protection against a disaster and will keep you and your family safe. You are the only person who can take charge of this effort; it is your responsibility. Like most of Southern California, Long Beach is at high risk of earthquakes, Lakewood Village Community Watch would say. “We strongly encourage everybody to be as prepared as possible by being informed and connected with the community disaster response network; making a family emergency plan; and completing an emergency supply kit for your home and work place. Making a commitment to complete these steps will provide you and your loved ones with the resources you will need after a major disaster. “ Heres how people can “Be Prepared and Stay Connected”. Be Informed In the hours and days following an earthquake, knowing how and where to get assistance may be critical information for you and your family. Here are several resources to assist you. •In an emergency KKJZ FM 88.1 will broadcast information to the Long Beach community. Additional resources are KNX AM 1070 and KFWB AM 980. LBTV broadcasts on Charter Communications Channel 3 and Verizon Fios Channel 21, and will provide information to the Long Beach community. •Register for local notification programs so you will be sent information from Emergency Response Officials with the City of Long Beach. The Long Beach Fire Department teaches this free program to train people to become self-sufficient during major disasters.
