Emerging farmer’s success in Haygrove Small Scale Production Unit Haygrove South Africa has recently visited a successful emerging farmer, Sydney in the Hemel and Aarde Valley in Hermanus. He is currently farming successfully in his 4x10m Haygrove Small Scale production unit. The Small scale production unit was donated to the small community on the farm by Haygrove Heaven that is currently commercially growing berries hydroponically on the farm. The community lost interest in the project and Sydney, a young school leaver that has been unable to find work, stepped up and started growing vegetables in the tunnel. With the help and guidance from the local Haygrove Berry farmer he has grown vegetables successfully now for over a year. He is currently growing tomatoes, peppers, spinach and basil in the unit. He has set up a hydroponic system in growing bags. He mixes his fertilizer in a High pressure tank from which it supply the plants with the nutrients through dripper system. He manage the nutrients in the tank by monitoring the EC. Sydney has managed to establish a local market set-off for his produce. He delivers his freshly picked vegetables to Moggs Cookhouse Restaurant: moggscookhouse/. The restaurant is situated to close to where he operate the greenhouse tunnel. The small scale production unit have given Sydney an opportunity to earn an income year round and aquire a scarce skill in hydroponic farming. He is learning valuable skills in running a small agri-business.
