Emmas Grade R class are learning about Under the Sea so yesterday she came home and decided to make a book. Emma told me the story, I wrote it (almost verbatim) and she illustrated it. Em even wanted a blurb in the back. She was so proud of herself & took it to show her teacher today. Book Making, no matter how simple the text or elaborate, is an excellent language building activity & stimulates the imagination. It teaches all aspects of story telling and books - title, author, sequence, characters, vocabulary, sentence construction, punctuation, word recognition, etc. Not sure you could do this or why this kind of activity is so relevant for learning how to read in grade 1: come on a Raising Readers Parent Course and learn how.
