Emotions + Knowledge + Actions = “Sunnah” Emotions + Actions – Knowledge = Bid`ah Emotions + Knowledge – Actions = Useless Emotions – Knowledge – Actions = Wasting life – Emotions – Knowledge – Actions = As good as Dead An example: When a person is filled with emotions and he wants to thank Allaah, the one who has knowledge will make the Sajdah al-Shukr (prostration of thankfulness), and thus follows the Sunnah. But if he is a person who has no knowledge will either not make the Sajdah at all or will pray 2 raka`aat instead, in either way he is not following the Sunnah. Narrated Abu Bakrah رضي الله عنه that when the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم received something which pleased him or some glad tidings, he would make the Sajdah al-Shukr (prostration in gratitude) to Allaah. [Sunan Abu Dawood (2774), Ibn Maajah (1394) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee] As for the one who has no emotions for the religion or any knowledge and doesn’t care for it is as good as dead as the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “The example of the one who Remembers (and Praises) his Lord (Allaah) in comparison to the one who does not Praises his Lord, is that of a living compared to a dead.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree Vol. 8 Hadeeth 416 on the authority of Abu Moosaa al-Ash`aree رضي الله عنه]
