Encouraging news for us bird lovers, and the objects of our affection. New York City Audubon, the American Bird Conservancy and Fordham University are collaborating on the research, which is focused on various types of glass and their ability to deter birds. During the experiments, a fine-mesh net hangs in front of the glass panels, so no birds actually hit the glass. In recent years, growing attention has been paid to the role of glass in buildings in the deaths of migrating birds. In January, scientists concluded that, nationwide, 365 million to 988 million birds die annually after crashing into buildings and houses. Some cities like San Francisco have adopted bird-safety standards for new buildings. And the U.S. Green Building Council, a nonprofit industry group that encourages the creation of environmentally sensitive buildings, introduced a bird-safety credit as part of its prized environmental certification, called LEED. Increasingly, glass companies and conservation groups have sought to meet the demand with new products.
