End of year type of question to ponder / debate. If you needed to pick 10 cities in the UK (all of the UK) as the better performing cities, what ones come to mind. These would be cities in which to invest so performance will be measured in terms of economics and housing trends. The distance to ones home does not matter. There are investors in every city so skip the normally comments about investing locally. More interested in the cities than who should invest in a specific city. To narrow this a bit, I am asking about communities where the employment base is good, the population / demographics are good (generally means stable or rising population, educated levels are a positive, skilled workers exist for businesses to hire), plus the city has good or improving infrastructure. Some say that the populations has to be over 100K or some other defined statistic. Others will use softer criteria. Lets leave London out as it is statistically rather different compared to the rest of the UK. To provide a bit of a neutral (non UK) example, let me highlight two cities in the USA. One is Detroit MI, The population has fallen from 2 million to under 700K since the 1950s. The decline continues. More houses than there is demand. The city is very large geographically by USA standards. This means the physical area to maintain and service is wide without the density to make the economics work. Detroit has just existed bankruptcy yet the future is far from clear. Then there is Portland OR. Trendy enough to have its own TV series. As a city, it is considered the best city in the USA for bicycling and mass transit. Diversified economy. Portland is a destination for well educated, younger knowledge workers so there is rising demand for housing. Quality of life is pretty high in Portland with the great outdoors a short drive away. What cities in the UK should be on a list of top places for an investor to consider? Provide a few hints as why you are suggesting a specific city or list of cities. More for others to ponder and debate.
