Energy is an essential part of everyday life. We use it to - TopicsExpress

Energy is an essential part of everyday life. We use it to heat and light our homes, to power our businesses and to transport people and goods. Without a clean, secure and sufficient supply of energy we would not be able to function as an economy or a modern society. In delivering this energy we face two major challenges: climate change and energy security. Climate change represents a significant risk to global ecosystems, the world economy and human populations. The scientific evidence is compelling that human activities, and in particular emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, are changing the world’s climate. In 2005, 40% of global carbon dioxide emissions were created by the generation of electricity. Temperatures and sea levels are rising. There is no scientific consensus on just how long we have to avoid dangerous and irreversible climate change, but the overwhelming majority of experts believe that climate change is already underway, and without action now to dramatically reduce carbon dioxide emissions, we will have a hugely damaging effect on our planet and way of life.
