Engineers’ Day celebrated in Srinagar Sham describes engineers as backbone of society Asks for evolving innovative techniques to develop sustainable infra SRINAGAR, SEPTEMBER 15: Describing the engineering fraternity as backbone of the society, Minister for PHE, Irrigation & Flood Control, Mr. Sham Lal Sharma has said that engineers have special role to play for architecting the infrastructure for the society and they must discharge their duties with honesty and dedication to fulfil the aspirations of the people. Speaking at a function organized to commemorate Engineers’ Day in the Institute of Engineers, here today, the Minister said that engineers should work with missionary zeal and deliver best to the society. He emphasized the need for adopting innovative techniques to develop sustainable infrastructure within the available resources. He said State of Jammu and Kashmir has meagre resources of its own and mainly dependent on the central funding, therefore, the engineers should formulate projects which should benefit the community for a longer period. Urging the retired fraternity to give suggestions/advices for bringing reforms in the system, the Minister said that veteran engineers, who have vast experience, can contribute a lot for the society. He said the Government will welcome their valuable words and utilize their suggestions for improving the system. Paying rich tributes to Sir M. Visvesvaraya, Greatest Engineer of India and recipient of Bharat Rattna, the Minister said that this great personality achieved highest and honourable position in the country with the dint of his abilities and hard work. His abilities were not acknowledged in India but in abroad as well. All engineers must take a pledge to adopt his footsteps, promote professionalism, hard work and dedication and carry forward the high traditions created by this Great man, and this would be the real tribute to the legendary, said the Minister. Several speakers highlighted the contribution of Sir Mokshagundam Vishvesvaraya for the development of society who always maintained high standards of engineering with his brilliant ideas and techniques. They paid rich tributes to this great personality. The engineers, who read their papers on the occasion, included Er. Ali Mohammad Rather, Executive Engineer, PDD, Er. Mohammad Ashraf Fazili, retired Chief Engineer, Er. Tanveer Rasool, Asstt. Professor, NIT, Srinagar, Ms. Aaquib S. Waheed Deva, AEE, PDD, Er. Hakim Shaukat Ali, Chief Engineer and others. They expressed their views on the subject and suggested several measures to improve the present engineering scenario. Er. Nazir Ahmed Qureshi, who is Chairman of the Institution of Engineers, KashmirCentre in his welcome address highlighted the activities of the Institution. He expressed his gratitude to the participants for gracing the occasion. He said the day also provides an opportunity to old colleagues to gather and interact with their new colleagues and refresh the ideas. He also expressed his thanks to the Minister for gracing the occasion. Earlier, the Minister along with the engineers garlanded the portrait of Sir Visvesvaraya and paid floral tributes. Prominent among those present on the occasion included, Chief Engineer, PHE, Kashmir, Mr. A.M. Lanker, Chief Engineer, Irrigation & Flood Control, Mir Javed Jaffer, a large number of retired and in-service engineers of different departments.
