English departments need to own their part in the demise of the humanities. The predominance of critical theory over the literature to which it is applied has crushed literatures vivid and continuous dream by condescending to it, undercutting the suspension of disbelief that is essential to actually experiencing a poem or story, and boring or befuddling undergraduates who can scarcely read the literature theyve been assigned, never mind Derrida, Lacan, etc. Thanatos has vanquished eros.
