Its so nice to share my experience of Sydney Olympic Park and my childhood memories of the State Abattoirs...after all these years theres been such a tremendous difference in the area...and it is wonderful today...although ill never forget our early morning trips to Homebush Abattoirs (As many lovingly referred to them) also (Homebush Bay meat market) because of the nearby Homebush Bay...and I think other names too....but yes ill never forget our early morning trips to the Abattoirs and meat markets to buy whole carcasses for my dads shop..we had several butcher shops in youth in the early 80s and well into the mid 2000s as well..me and my brother would often roam the front driveway into the meatworks which was beautifully decorated with large palm trees on both sides. There were large brick lamp posts throughout and others on their own....there was a beautiful and large 2 storey building at the entrance to both the meat markets and Abattoirs...it was really grand and elegant...I thought at the time that it was a mansion or a lodge of some sort....there were beautiful palm trees and manicured gardens all around it....it was in fact...its Administration building..and thankfully when the abattoirs were demolished....that wasnt....its still there just as I remember it from childhood at Sydney Olympic Park....there was a canteen facing the meat markets on the other side towards the paddocks and saleyards and from the main driveway..there were 2 main meat markets...The Sydney Metropolitan Meat market 1935 & The Country Meat Market 1955 and up the back...behind them there were the Abattoirs and also a train line as well....I remember it all ....I also remember the stench too...LOL
