Enjoy the Cumbia rythm this weekend! Cumbia is a popular music genre originated in Colombia. During the 1940s, cumbia expand through Latin America. At first, cumbia songs were incorporated in the repertory of big bands of música tropical. In the late 60s and 70s, in Peru and Mexico begin to adapt to local styles of music and in some cases with rock n roll influences (for example, the use of electric guitar). Pioneering Colombian record label Discos Fuentes, established in 1934, scored a starring role in the spread of cumbia music through the decades and carrying a cult devotion in North America and Europe. Since the 90s, the genre is established in the Mexican community in the United States due to the exponents of the Regional Mexican Music. One of the biggest stars of this movement was the Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla, who brought cumbia to Latin pop world. In Argentina, the genre extends from the Andes to the capital and appears cumbia villera, that incorporate codes of the slums of Buenos Aires.
