Enjoy this message on a terrific Thursday! “Without wise leadership, a nation falls; there is safety in having many advisers.” –Proverbs 11:14, NLT “How Do You Recognize Strong Leadership?” As the 2012-13 NBA season came to a close with a great seven-game series between the Miami Heat and the San Antonio Spurs, many of the sports pundits applauded the Heat’s front office with Micky Arison, the owner of the team, Pat Riley, the team president, and Erik Spoelstra, the Heat head coach. They applauded these gentlemen for being first-class individuals and doing everything within their power to bring another world championship back to South Beach. Due to their hard work and diligence, sports pundits recognize the fact that the Heat has strong leadership. Do you attend a church where you recognize strong leadership within your pastor and diaconate? Do you work for an organization where the leader/president/chairman provides the best leadership he/she can for their organization? Are you a part of a civic group that strives on strong leadership? Well, if you answer either of these questions “No,” then God sent me to minister to you on how to recognize strong leadership. If you answered these questions “yes,” then this should be a refresher course in recognizing strong leadership and things you ought to do in order to display strong leadership within your organizations. Proverbs 11:14 provides us two critical attributes in recognizing strong leadership. Solomon begins this text by saying this: “Without wise leadership, a nation falls.” The first attribute to recognizing strong leadership is the fact that you have wise leadership. In other words, you do not want to be under someone that hasn’t experienced some bumps and bruises within their lifetimes. Remember, brothers and sisters, God do not allow you to go through things without it benefiting Him and eventually His children down the road! Within someone’s wise leadership, you may see an attribute of resiliency because they had to bounce back from life’s tricks and messes. Within someone‘s wise leadership, you may see an attribute of excellence because all they knew from school to their careers is excellence. Within someone’s wise leadership, you may see a quiet mouth here and there because they recognize that silence is golden and if you allow people to talk, they will tell on themselves. Wise leadership is critical to any group, organization, country, or anything becoming what God desires, but if your organization lacks it, then it will crumble! If you see that your organization lacks wise leadership, do two things: pray that God will change the mindset of those at the top or pray that God will shift you to another place where wise leadership is the order of the day. Solomon completes the text with the following: “There is safety in having many advisers.” The second and final attribute in recognizing strong leadership is that they have many advisers. One thing that we must realize is that no man is an island. With this being said, you cannot receive every answer from yourself. You need to have advisers in your corner providing you feedback, clarity, understanding, wisdom, knowledge, etc. in how to handle matters. You have to create alliances that will build your brand and expand your horizons of your leadership. As some of you may/may not know, I serve as the President of my chapter of Blacks In Government (BIG) and I tend not to make decisions on my own volition. I usually tap into those who have been in the game longer than me and rely on members who have another perspective to bring our events to fruition and to make them awesome and worthwhile affairs! If you want to see your organization thrive with you at the helm, make sure that you have many advisers because there’s safety in that! If you want to be a part of a thriving organization, talk with your leader to see if they have more than one advisor/mentor within their ear, giving guidance to what needs to be done. In closing, Solomon shared with us two critical attributes that will help us see strong leadership: one that has many advisers and that they have wisdom within their leadership. It is my prayer that whatever organization you are a part of (work, civic, religious) that you have strong leadership at the top. If not, pray for those leaders that God would encourage them to be better and the best to help you and your colleagues grow!
