Enjoyed a lovely bimble down the upper Wansbeck yesterday with second year OE students to mark the start of the paddling section of the L3 programme and the start of them gaining their BCU 3 star awards. Its not very often you paddle a river hat youve paddled for years and suddenly find the addition of a brand new grade 3 rapid! The new rapid is a result of them demolishing the third weir at Bothel (as part of the Morpeth flood defences). The photo shows the lead in drop and there is another section below (not seen in the photo). We ran it down the right and then back left (avoiding a tree which may be potentially dangerous in high flows) to the big eddie that used to be at the botttom of the weir, but it would go down the left too and with a little more water the boof of the ledge might be good! Will be interesting seeing it at different levels over the coming months and hopefully the tree will shift next time its in spate!
