Enola Gay navigator remembered in hometown August 5, 2014 By NICO SALVATORI (nsalvatori@sungazette) NORTHUMBERLAND - Those who paid their respects to Theodore Dutch VanKirk on Monday at the Joseph W. Epler Funeral Home remembered him as a war hero and as a man. The Northumberland native was widely known in town and around the world as the navigator of the Enola Gay, the B-29 Superfortress aircraft that dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945, precipitating the end of World War II.
