Enyeama said he is placed in quarantine for three weeks by his French club amid ebola fears SUPER Eagles skipper Vincent Enyeama has revealed that his French club Lille monitors him for up to three weeks whenever he returns from international duty to determine if he is carrying the dreaded ebola virus disease (EVD). Since the first outbreak in the summer, EVD has spread across West Africa, with about 4,500 people dying from the virus, with Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia being the most affected countries. Nigeria was afflicted after Liberian brought the virus into the country in July when attending a regional summit in Calabar and he came in contact with several Nigerians in Lagos. Following quick intervention, however, all the cases have been treated and Nigeria has since been declared Ebola-free by the World Health Organisation. Despite this, however, the stigma attached to West Africa remains with several European countries still believing it is an Africa-wide pandemic. Enyeama is currently in camp with the Super Eagles in Abuja ahead of Saturdays African Nations Cup qualifier away to Congo. Along with most of the other European-based players, he will be rigorously examined and placed in quarantine when he returns to his clubside at the end of the international break. “My club monitors me for three weeks any time I return from Nigeria because of ebola and nobody wants to sit around you or shake you then. However, I must now commend the Nigerian government for the massive effort they put up to eradicate it from the country and get an approval from the World Health Organisation,” Enyeama added. He maintained, however, that if he had his way, next year’s African Nations Cup will still be shifted to a later date because of the virus. For now, the tournament does not have a host after Morocco pulled out, citing ebola fears. Enyeama said: “If I were the Confederation of African Football, I will suspend the tournament because it is difficult to contain the virus. However, if we qualify, I will play in the tournament.” Despite currently nursing a shoulder injury, Enyeama is confident of being fit for the game against Congo and the final qualifier at home to South Africa four days later. Nigeria needs to win both matches to stand any chance of qualifying for next years Nations Cup.
