Epilepsy Awareness Month. 1 in 10 people will have a seizure in their lifetime. 1 in 26 people will develop epilepsy. epilepsy is not contagious. it is a spectrum of neurological disorders that can affect any one at any age regardless of race, creed or color. there are over forty types of seizures, some can be treated but many cannot. there is currently no cure for epilepsy. there is also a risk of a seizure being fatal. in fact, more people die from seizure related causes than do from breast cancer and drunk driving. if someone is having a seizure, never put anything in their mouth. people cannot choke on their tongue, that is an incorrect myth. the proper response is to protect them, turn them on their side to make sure their airway is clear, stay with them, monitor the length of the seizure, remain calm and reassure them when the seizure passes. if a seizure lasts more than five minutes or if the person is pregnant, in water or clearly choking, you should call 911. please remember and share this information, you could save someone’s life.
