The average annual temperature in this city is 16 °C (61 °F). Although frosts have been known to occur, temperatures stay consistent throughout the year. This city was founded by Samuel Baker in the 19th century. It allowed for British civil servants to seek relief from the hot, tropical weather of the lowland areas. Today, Nuwara Eliya is a major tea growing region in Sri Lanka. Its mild climate and high altitude help for the cultivation of a tea that has a distinct flavor, a high quality orange pekoe tea. Orange pekoe tea from this region is considered among the worlds finest. This area is also popular with bird watchers because of the various bird species that congregation in the region. It is also a major base for trips to Horton Plains National Park. The park is home to Worlds End, a cliff with a sheer drop of 4000 ft.
