Epson Philippines shared a link. Today It’s More Fun in (Epson) Philippines! Donsol in Sorsogon is a popular tourist destination for whale shark viewing. For 100 years, residents have already known about the presence of whale sharks in the area, but it was only in 1998 when Donsol became known as the “Whale Shark Capital of the World”. Interaction is regulated by the local Department of Tourism (DOT) office to protect the sharks. The number of swimmers per boat should be limited to six, no scuba divers are allowed and swimmers should keep a distance of 3 meters from the sharks. Whale sharks have no known predators except for humans, with numbers declining due to commercial fishing. Several international government bodies have put whale sharks under the endangered species protection status. Conservation measures with growing tourism interest in whale sharks have ensured a slow but steady recovery of their population.
