We took our students to the jail to learn about choices and consequence, etc. We chatted with inmates who were very brave and open about their stories. They were even willing to answer questions from our students, many of whom have endured similar struggles with family and peers. One student asked, how do you keep from seeking the wrong kind of attention, from doing what bad people want you to do? The inmate answered with a question: what do you like to do by yourself? Well, I like horses... No, I mean COMPLETELY alone. What do you like to do when youre all by yourself? The student thought for a moment, then said I hate being all by myself. The inmates response was gentle but powerful. Thats the problem, she said. Figure yourself out, learn to like yourself, learn to be okay even when alone, and learn who YOU are. Then youll never feel the need to become someone else for another persons selfish desires. This is one of the most insightful things Ive ever heard at work, or anywhere. If you have a teenage son or daughter or sibling who reaches out for love from the wrong places, please teach them to love themselves. Its the most important thing they can learn how to do.
