Erm... The traffic survey starts tomorrow IF the weather holds. Harrogate Road meet at the CO-OP. 7.30 to 9.00 in the a.m. and 4.30 to 6.00 in the p.m. Each person doing a half hour slot or you can do a full 1.5 hours if you really really want to! We are doing Monday to Thursday for two weeks so there is plenty of opportunity! I have made some little forms for you to use. The important thing is not to duplicate effort. However if you do spot some interesting behaviour that is as a result of volume of traffic feel free to make a note of it somewhere. Why just Harrogate Road? Because this is where the developments traffic element will fail. Their traffic evaluation (conducted on a single day in 2011) states the road is not busy and the current traffic light and roundabout system is holding its own. This is not the case. Residents know that this road gets very busy. Collecting good data from here will hold a strong argument that the junction currently fails with the current level of use and indicates that it is quite unlikely to cope with the increased volume of traffic. It is not simply about them proposing a revised design of system. It is about the volume of use. Unfortunately, there are some things we cannot measure or at least will need an imaginative way of assessing:- a) What waiting times do drivers experience at the junction and approximately how far do traffic queues stretch And b) What routes do drivers take to avoid the delays at the junctions – for example I have observed vehicles (going downhill) turning left from Harrogate road onto Moorside Road and then right onto Pullen Avenue. I imagine these vehicles also go from the roundabout, up Victoria Road then right, down Victoria Avenue to join Harrogate Road. There are other potential traffic issues to be sure, but this survey will give us a very good case against for a moderate amount of work. Thanks Rob Shackleton
