Especially for Linda Ames who has been patiently awaiting these notes. At 10 AM Saturday morning on June 14th, a group of pond enthusiasts gathered at Ron’s Tranquility Gardens on 4th Street NW in New Philadelphia for his first ever Pond Seminar which was held by guest speaker, Rick Weidman from Knoxville, Tennessee, VP Sales & Business Development at Airmax Eco-Systems of Romeo, Michigan. The main topic was Proper Water Management. I guess this is the number one concern for every pond owner. To do so you start by Managing Water Aeration. Limit Phosphates and add Diffused Aeration. Benefits of this include: 1. It adds Oxygen to the water. 2. It increases the number of good and beneficial Bacteria in your pond. 3. It will reduce you pond maintenance. 4. Saves on energy costs. 5. Makes a great De-Icer. 6. And your fish will love it. By using a Defused Aeration System it will: 1. Help manage a clearer, cleaner and healthier pond. 2. Helps to eliminate “Bottom Muck” and minimizes bad gases. 3. Promotes a working Eco-system. 4. Energy efficiency. 5. Reduces likelihood of fish kill. 6. You’ll enjoy it more and work on it less. He recommended that in addition to running your falls, you also should run an aerator. In fact, some pond owners keep a valid eco-system with just an aeration system only. With an aeration system, it will keep a hole in the ice to allow the gasses to escape and should be raised off the bottom. This prevents colder water from on top to recalculate. A zone of warmer water at the bottom will be more beneficial to the fish by raising it. His only controversial statement which was a complete surprise, he doesn’t feed his fish at all. Of course they don’t grow into the larger fish we all seem to seek. He does maintain a smaller amount of fish than recommended for his pond size. Water PH for your pond is 6.5 to 8.5 which is a normal range. I do believe that everyone in attendance, including myself came away with a new awareness of proper water maintenance and management. Even though Rick says you can proper manage your water with just an aeration system, I don’t think turning off my falls will be an option. It is a major feature of my eco-system and the sight and sound of the water flowing makes it so. Until the cost of electricity prohibits me from running my 3,500 GPH pump, I will continue to do so, however, I will add a full time aeration system to run in conjunction. Many thanks to Ron and his family for opening up their home and business to accommodate us and for the cookout and refreshments furnished afterwards. Special thanks to Rick Weidman for his presentation and information. I know I will benefit from it extensively.
