Esperemos que no cancelen el programa para los estudiantes! The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday voted 224 to 201, along party lines, to approve an amendment by Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, that seeks to defund the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Announced last year by the Obama administration, DACA exercises prosecutorial discretion, allowing qualifying young people who were brought to the United States illegally as children to get a temporary work visa and a two-year reprieve from deportation. If passed by the Senate, the amendement would deny the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding to administer the program. "There is only one group of people harmed by this vote, and that’s children," First Focus Campaign for Children President Bruce Lesley said in a statement in response to the House vote. "Every parent and every American who values kids should be appalled." The House vote comes as the Senate prepares to debate the immigration reform bill, which includes an accelerated pathway to citizenship for young undocumented immigrants who came to the country as children.
