Essay up on Stonekettle Station. 45 years ago today, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set a fragile tinfoil space ship down on the surface of the moon in a feat of skill and courage the likes of which have rarely been seen. Everything since has been a long slow anticlimax. I wrote this five years ago, on the 40th anniversary of the landing. Since then America has given up manned spaceflight. There is promise that soon, perhaps, innovative private companies will send human beings aloft - but America herself, will never fly again. As a nation, weve lost our sense of discovery and adventure and that saddens me more than I can say.
