#Esther(Greek) 8 The Kings Decree in Favour of the Jews 13[1] This is a copy of the decree:“Greetings from King Xerxes the Great to the governors of the 127 provinces, which extend from India to Sudan, and to all those who are loyal to us. 14[2] “Many people become increasingly arrogant when honours are given to them and favours are done for them. 15[3] They do not know what to do with so much good fortune, so they not only try to harm our subjects, but they even scheme against those who grant them favours. 16[4] They are never grateful for what people do for them, and they even think they can escape the judgement of God, who hates evil and sees everything. In their arrogance they listen to the flattery of ignorant, sinful people. 17[5] “It often happens also that friends who have been entrusted with administrative responsibilities exert pressure on those in authority. They make their leaders their partners in killing people and bring about misfortunes that can never be remedied. 18[6] These friends, by their lies and deceitful ways, take advantage of the good will of their rulers. 19[7] “You can see examples of this misuse of power not only in the stories that have been handed down to us from the past, but in the more recent outrageous things which have happened among you. 20[8] “I intend to make sure that in future my kingdom will remain untroubled and peaceful for all. 21[9] This can be done by changing certain policies and by judging fairly each situation that comes to my attention. 22[10] “Consider, for example, the case of Haman son of Hammedatha, a Macedonian. He is a foreigner with no Persian blood and with no trace of my generosity; but I welcomed him, 23[11] and he received the benefit of my concern and love for all nations. He was, in fact, proclaimed ‘Father’ of the empire and received more honour than anyone else, except the king. 24[12] “But his arrogance knew no limits, and he tried to murder me and take over the empire. 25[13] In his crafty and deceitful way, he asked that Mordecai be put to death — Mordecai, who once saved my life and who has always supported me. He even asked for the death of Esther, our blameless queen, and in fact, the death of all the Jewish people. 26[14] His purpose was to leave us helpless and to allow the Macedonians to take over the Persian Empire. 27[15] Even though this wicked criminal plotted to wipe out the Jews, I find that they are not traitors at all but are governed by very just laws. 28[16] They worship the living God, the highest and greatest God, who has kept our empire in its excellent condition from the time of our ancestors until our own day. 29[17] “Therefore I advise you not to carry out the instructions issued in the letters sent out by Haman. 30[18] He is the person responsible for all of this, and he has been hanged, along with his entire family, at the gates of Susa. God, who governs all things, has given him the speedy punishment that he deserved. 31[19] “I order you to post copies of this decree in every public place. Permit the Jews to live by their own customs, 32[20] and give them support when they defend themselves against those who attack them on the day set for their destruction, the thirteenth day of Adar, the twelfth month. 33[21] God, who governs all things, has turned that day of destruction into a day of celebration for his chosen people. 34[22] “Include this day among your national holidays and celebrate it as a festival. 35[23] Now and in the future it will remind us and all our allies of the way God watches over our nation, and those who plot against us will be reminded of Gods threat of destruction. 36[24] “Every province, every city, without exception, which does not obey these orders will feel my anger. It will be destroyed in battle and burnt to the ground. No human being will ever go there again, and even the birds and wild animals will avoid it for ever. 13[12a] Ésta es una copia de la carta: 14[12b] «El gran rey Artajerjes saluda a los gobernadores de las ciento veintisiete provincias, desde la India hasta Etiopía, y a sus leales súbditos. 15[12c] »Hay muchas personas que, al recibir grandes honores de la generosidad de sus bienhechores, se llenan de orgullo, y no sólo procuran tratar injustamente a mis súbditos sino que, no pudiendo resistir tantos honores, se dedican a hacer planes contra sus bienhechores. 16[12d] No se contentan con ser desagradecidos con los hombres, sino que se llenan de orgullo al verse aplaudidos por los tontos, y se imaginan que pueden escapar del justo castigo de Dios, que siempre lo ve todo y aborrece el mal. 17[12e] Los gobernantes confían a veces el gobierno de los asuntos a hombres que consideran amigos, pero éstos muchas veces los persuaden a hacerse cómplices de crímenes contra personas inocentes y a causar males irreparables; 18[12f] con engaños y mentiras malévolas traicionan la sinceridad y las buenas intenciones de los gobernantes. 19[12g] Esto puede verse no solamente en las historias antiguas que nos han transmitido, sino también ahora. Basta con abrir los ojos para darse cuenta de la cantidad de crímenes cometidos por esa peste de gobernantes indignos. 20[12h] Por eso, mis esfuerzos se enderezarán en el futuro a asegurar a todos los hombres un reino tranquilo y pacífico, 21[12i] efectuando los cambios necesarios y juzgando siempre con la mayor bondad posible los asuntos que lleguen a mis manos. 22[12j] »Yo había recibido como huésped al macedonio Amam, hijo de Hamedata, que en realidad no era de origen persa, sino extranjero y muy alejado de mi bondadosa manera de ser; 23[12k] y él había experimentado la bondad con que trato a todas las naciones, hasta el punto de que fue proclamado «padre del rey» y reverenciado por todos como la segunda persona en dignidad después de mí. 24[12l] Pero él no supo llevar tan elevado cargo, sino que tramó quitarme el reino y la vida, 25[12m] y valiéndose de enredos y engaños pidió la muerte para Mardoqueo, quien me había salvado la vida y siempre me había hecho beneficios, y para Ester, mi intachable compañera en la dignidad real, lo mismo que para toda su nación. 26[12n] Por estos medios pretendía tomarme desprevenido y quitarles a los persas el dominio, y pasárselo a los macedonios. 27[12ñ] Pero yo he averiguado que los judíos, a los cuales este pésimo criminal quería exterminar, no son malhechores, sino que viven de acuerdo con leyes sumamente justas 28[12o] y que son hijos del gran Dios, altísimo y viviente, quien lo mismo a mí que a mis antepasados nos ha conservado el reino en estado floreciente. 29[12p] »Así pues, no se debe hacer ningún caso a las cartas que envió Amam, porque él, que fue quien tramó todo esto, ya ha sido colgado en la horca junto con su familia delante de las puertas de Susa. De esta manera Dios, que tiene poder sobre todo, le dio prontamente el castigo que merecía. 30[12q] »Copias de esta carta deben colocarse en todo lugar público. Y debe permitirse a los judíos vivir de acuerdo con sus leyes. También deben los demás ayudar a los judíos, para que se defiendan de quienes los ataquen el día trece del mes doce, el mes de Adar, en caso de que se encuentren en dificultades. 31[12r] Porque Dios, Señor de todas las cosas, ha hecho que este día sea un día de alegría y no de exterminio para el pueblo elegido. 32[12s] Y ustedes, los judíos, entre sus otras fiestas y conmemoraciones, deben celebrar con toda alegría este día memorable, para que, tanto ahora como en el futuro, tengamos prosperidad yo y los persas bien dispuestos, y al mismo tiempo sea para mis enemigos un recuerdo de su destrucción. 33-36[12t] Si alguna ciudad o región no cumple estas órdenes, será terriblemente destruida con las armas y el fuego.
