Bring banners, signs, flags, flyers, sound systems, musical instruments, and friends. If you can’t blockade, you can participate in the supporting rallies — the more people there, the safer all will be and the greater the chance that longshore workers will refuse to unload the ship that day. People are needed to join the actual blockade. People are needed to stand in support on the sidewalks. People are needed to shuttle participants from the Tacoma Dome to the Port of Tacoma. Wheelchair access vehicles are needed for transportation and shuttling. Bring snacks, food, and water for yourself and others on the picket line. Food and water donations are needed. If you are available during any period from August 22 through August 24, let the organizers know. AUGUST 21 PRESS RELEASE August 21, 2014 Contact: Nada Elia 425 736-4859 nadaelia@gmail Amin Odeh 206 605-8448 odehamin@yahoo CHANGE IN DAY/TIME FOR SEATTLE/TACOMA BLOCKADE OF ISRAELI SHIP The Israeli freight company ZIM continues to delay the estimated arrival time of its freight ship into the Port of Tacoma and the Port of Seattle. Local human-rights activists are adapting to the changes and mobilizing communities to block the ship from unloading at Puget Sound ports. Based on the experience of the recent blockade of a ZIM ship in Oakland, more changes in arrival time are likely. The Seattle/Tacoma Block The Boat campaign will send out alerts on these changes, and updates on time and location will be available via Twitter, RSS Feed and text alert options on the website for the Block the Boat action. CURRENT ESTIMATED DATES AND TIMES subject to change - updates at blocktheboatnw.wordpress FRIDAY, AUGUST 22 6:00 PM Port of Tacoma Washington United Terminal, Port of Tacoma Rd & Maxwell Wy, Tacoma, WA SUNDAY AUGUST 24 time to be determined Port of Seattle Spokane Street Fishing Area, SW Spokane St Bridge Seattle, WA BACKGROUND: On the heels of a successful action in Oakland, CA to block an Israeli ZIM freight ship from unloading in the port there, human-rights activists in the Puget Sound area will blockade other freight ships from the same Israeli company from unloading at the ports of Tacoma and Seattle. The West Coast blockades of Israeli ZIM ships are part of the international campaign of boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel’s ongoing violations of human rights and international law, including Israel’s recent assault on the captive population of Gaza, during which Israel bombed schools, several hospitals, seven UN-‐designated shelters, Gaza’s only power plant, and Gaza’s water purification system. More than 2000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed by Israel’s attacks over the past month. Local activists are also responding to the Palestinian General Federation Trade Union call for international supporters to take action in support of the people of Gaza. A letter signed by 93 Gazan civil society members, including teachers, doctors, and lawyers, demands three basic rights: 1) freedom for Palestinians to move freely in and out of Gaza; 2) unlimited import and export of supplies and goods, including by land, sea and air; 3) unrestricted use of the Gaza seaport. The Israeli company ZIM is estimated to have lost millions of dollars a day for the delay in Oakland. The day and time of the Seattle/Tacoma blockades is subject to change because of the schedule of the ZIM company freighters. Updates are public on blocktheboatnw.wordpress and questions can be directed to blocktheboatnw@gmail. ###
