Eternal Life Cannot Be Earned, But Only Received As A Gift by Janet Hanson What is better than being young and rich? “And Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.’” Matthew 19:23-24 ESV In biblical times, wealth was considered a blessing, a sign that you were good with God. So when this man walks up to Jesus, the disciples must have risen with respect. Not only is the man prosperous, he is good. He has kept all the commandments, at least the ones that involve outward acts of kindness and charity. But the man senses there is something missing, and, being rich, concludes there may be something big he can offer God, to ensure his future will be secure. Even today, when we wish to get God’s attention, to gain his favor, we may look at what we have to offer. We may not be sitting on piles of money, but we can throw ourselves into ministry, or aim for spiritual perfection to prove we are worthy of his love. In answer to the question, “What should I do?” Jesus doesn’t mention the first five commandments, which deal with a person’s relationship with God. It’s as if Jesus wants the young man to notice something. It’s easy to be a “good person” in the eyes of others, but what is happening in his heart? Is there an idol he clings to instead of God? Evidently there is, for the man walks away in sorrow. Reflection: Make a mental list of your assets, abilities and accomplishments, and clench your fist as if you hold them in your hand. Hear the invitation of Jesus. Will you open your hand and come to him with nothing, letting him be your all, and receive in return riches you cannot earn or buy? Will you let it all go for the sake of knowing Jesus? Hear his assurance, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible” (verse 26). Read Matthew 19 By Janet Hanson
