Evangeline is a Winner I had to write a letter of thanks for the amazing Evangeline production at the Confederation Centre. Wow. I was knocked out by Chilina Kennedy’s portrayal of the Character, Evangeline. She is a great actor and a fantastic singer. Adam Brazier was just as wonderful in his role as Gabriel. When the two of them sang duets, I could hardly breathe. I was locked into their story. I recently read the book The Cajuns by Dean Jobb, a writer in Halifax. He gave me the whole story of the Acadian people in N.S., N.B., and P.E.I. in such a great style that this was just the icing on the cake to watch a dramatic portrayal of what Acadians went through. Full marks to Ted Dykstra for his inspired and sensitive rendering of this complex story. The music is wonderful and the sets, with antique maps rolling behind the action, is a fine touch. But the singing, who can get past saying more about it? If Marcus Nance sang five songs it would have been worth the price of admission. He makes Stevie Wonder look like an “alright singer.” Terry Hatty gave an amazing performance as the priest at Grand Pre and rocked the house with his huge voice. Rejean Cournoyer played a complicated villain and is a standout performer who earned his huge ovation. You have to love how Albert Arsenault and Glenda Landry joined in as the true P.E.I. Acadian components. Full marks for their portrayal of the joyful nature of Acadians, even in the face of great trouble. I want to thank Confederation Centre for launching this fine production. I could barely leave my seat when the play was over. Faye Pound, Darnley P.E.I Written in The Guardian, Wednesday, July 10, 2013.
