Evelyn Ndangire was born HIV positive and she has been on Anti-retroviral (ARVs) tablets since 2011, according to her grandmother, Joyce Murokole. Evelyn 7 is a Top class pupil at Trust Future primary school in Kazo central, Nansana town council. She lives with her grandmother who is in her 90`s. She is a resident of Kazo central in Nansana. At her age, she knows the time she is supposed to take her medicine even if her grandmother doesn’t remind her. “I take it every morning at 7:00am before heading to school and at exactly 4:00pm in the evening when I am back from school”. She said. “Usually my grandmother gives me some food before taking the medicine in the morning and same in the evening”. She added. On whether she is weak, Evelyn confirmed that she is healthy and she enjoys playing with her friends at school. “At home, after doing my homework, my grandmother permits me to play with my friends”. When asked what she intends to be in future, she confidently said that she wants to be a police woman. However, she declined to explain why she likes police. “Whenever she is asked what she wants to be after her studies, she answers the same but I too, she has never told me why. Maybe she wants to fight criminals in the country”. Evelyn’s grandmother said. Much as she is not talkative, but her performance in class is outstanding according to her class teacher, Phionah Nakato. Joyce, who at the moment cannot move out of her house due to high blood pressure, explained that Evelyn lost her father when she was 3 years old. Later, her mother remarried but she comes often to check on them. Joyce couldnt control her tears to flow during the interview. “I produced 9 children but now I have only 3. Others passed on”. She said. What bothers her a lot is her granddaughter. “I am afraid she may not complete her studies because her uncle’s who had promised to support her education, all died. Sometimes her mother finds no money to buy her scholastic materials. Also as patient, she should be changing on diet, but it`s impossible”. Joyce said. She added that if she could get a sponsor to support her granddaughter`s education, she would be relieved. By Emily Kembabazi –Nansana. kembabaziemily@yahoo.
