Even though at times I feel intense discomfort over being a member of a species that has wasted so much of its potential - that is consuming itself in meaningless armed conflict fueled by irrational ideologies, and is simultaneously destroying the Earth, the most beautiful and exceptional thing in the known universe - I take some amount of comfort in the fact that we represent a reflective facet of nature, that in the words of Carl Sagan, „we are a way for the cosmos to know itself.“ I cannot think of a more succinct, elegant way of describing what it is that makes human life meaningful, in spite of all of the horror and evil that we have managed to create in the short time that we’ve been here.
